“Mature adult students ask wonderful questions and are less inclined to seek or be distractions,” says Thom Sargent. He should know. He spent much of his career teaching music in public schools in Littleton, New Bedford, and Raynham, MA and retired from teaching as Music Director at Classical High School in Providence. Now, among other things, he’s the leader of The Second Half study group “Verdi – His Life and Opera.” I dropped by one day in March and saw an enthusiastic group of scholars watching, listening, and debating as Thom treated them to lectures on DVD, music from various sources, and a robust discussion of what they had seen and heard.
