Free, public talk by Harris Gruber at Westport Library

July 2, 2015 @ 3:00 pm

Patrick O’Brian: More than Just the Author of  “The Best Historical Novels Ever Written” is the title of a free, public talk by Harris Gruber, July 2  – 3 pm – Westport Library,

Second Half members: Let your friends know!  This is an excellent opportunity for them to learn both about The Second Half and about a fascinating andpopular author.

IMG_4343Harris Gruber, who leads a Second Half study group on O’Brian’s novels, writes:

”Author Patrick O’Brian is best known around the world for the Aubrey-Maturin historical novels, set during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812.   But are you aware that he wrote books about animals?  That he wrote the definitive biography of Pablo Picasso?   That he has translated  the works of Colette and Simon de Beauvoir, as well as the biography of Charles de Gaulle?  There’s more. His range is fascinating.”

And we’re confident you will find Mr. Gruber’s brief talk, followed by a question and answer period, fascinating as well.  Join us for light refreshments and a fresh view of O’Brian from a local sailor and self-professed “water rat.” At the same time, we’ll be glad to answer your questions about The Second Half.  We are a non-profit organization of about 400 members, powered primarily by volunteers, and serving South Coast Massachusetts and nearby Rhode Island residents.
