Join us for a tour of the earthworks of this Revolutionary War Redoubt. It was originally called Tiverton Heights Fort, and was rushed into place shortly after the British occupied Newport to prevent any attempts by the redcoats to invade the mainland. Its strategic importance is clearly visible from atop the observation tower, with its sweeping view of the Sakonnet Passage and Aquidneck Island. Learn of William Barton’s daring raid to capture British General Richard Prescott, and the major military operation launched from the site, with colonial troops joining the French navy and the Marquis de Lafayette in an attempt to drive the British out of Newport. For those interested we will continue on to explore the pristine Sin and Flesh Brook natural area.
